WITH THE 4L60E TRANS YOU'LL WANT TO INSTALL A GOOD SHIFT KIT, LIKE A TRANS GO. I'D INSTALL A TRANSMISSION TEMP GAUGE, JUST IN CASE (GIVES YOU THAT EXTRA PEICE OF MIND) A TRANS RUNNING AT 170 DEGREES OR LESS IF A HAPPY TRANS! IT'S A GREAT IDEA TO INSTALL AN AFTERMARKET TRANSMISSION COOLER IN EVERY CAR, NO MATTER WHAT YOU DRIVE OR HOW HARD YOU DRIVE IT. (Have the fluild completely flushed and filled & of course change filter and gasket too, total fill for a 4L60E transmission is around 11 qts for most all f-body carsUnder harsher driving conditions such, a lot of stop & go driving in hot weather, drive the car hard, racing, etc. Preventive Maintance is key!!! (change trans filter & intill 5 qts fill every 12,000 miles or 1 year,) if you drive you car normal/daily driver, and get on it every once in a while, i'd change the trans filter and refill with about 5 quarts of good quaility AFT fluild, such as Amsoil ATF or Valvoline Maxlife ATF are both excellent products in my opion. It also depends on the car was drivin when new, how well it was maintained, what kind of fluild & filter kit was used, etc. Every single car and trans is slightly different in every car. (I'm not talking crazy mods, just the average stuff we all do, lets say 40 or 50 extra hp and same increase over stock torque)

use) and how the extra power from mods tends to affect them over time. I'm just wondering how these trannys tend to hold up with age (a.k.a.

We put out pretty much the maximum amount of torque stock, and as we all like to mod surely a large number of us are exceeding this "limit". I see Lots of complaints out there about the 700R4s and I wonder if they still exist in the 4L60E and in looking up the specs I also see that 4L60Es were only rated to handle a maximum of 360ftlbs of torque!!! It seems we have an updated version of a 700R4 (700R4 became 4L60 -simply renamed, then the electronic version of that came out and was called the 4L60E) I can't remember too many issues popping up on this forum but then I haven't been paying that much attention to tranny threads until now. So, my question is, if everything is shifting and downshifting at what "feels to be" the right places, is everything ok? Or what mandatory things should I check for so I don't ruin the transmission? Does anyone recommend "pressing that adjuster button" and setting it (by opening the throttle all the way) to "set" it properly? Or is that not necessary if it's currently running right?Īnother rumor I've heard is that it is better to have the TV cable to tight than too loose to be "safe".I've been doing a lot of reading up on transmissions lately and it has me wondering.Just how good are the trannies in our F-bodies? This is how I've ran the transmission so far, and when on the road during the initial tests, the shifting and downshifting "feels right".

When at full throttle position, I checked the exposed metal cable by pressing on it, and there wasn't any obvious extra cable slack to be pulled. I decided to just leave the slider right where it was.without "pressing the release button" on the adjuster. After hooking it up to the 84 transmission, I then hooked it up top. I left the same cable that was on the 91 truck on there, I didn't swap it out. Now, onto the supposedly highly important "TV cable" adjustment. Before, I could only occasionally get it into 4th gear, and I had to really get it up to speed before it would go. Never had that happen in 4,000 miles of driving with the old tranny. Not only did I get my 3rd and 4th gears back, but it will actually drive in 4th gear at 40-45 mph. I thought for sure I'd be pulling it out and rebuilding it. THE $50.00 1984 TRANSMISSION WORKED WITH NO REBUILD!!! Everything was completely interchangeable. (One was plastic, one was metal.)Īll things considered, the swap went perfectly. I ended up having to melt the brazing that was holding the metal speedometer gear onto the output shaft, and re-braze it onto the other transmission since they were different styles. I swapped the transmission tailsections to make the speedometer swap easier. The 27 spline torque converter fit perfectly onto the transmission, and onto the flexplate, and into the crank.
